Considering Lasik Eye Surgery With Pre-Existing Conditions

If you have one of these common pre-existing conditions, here is what you should know before you make a decision to have laser eye surgery.

If you have acne and have been using any topical medications with Accutane in it, it can cause dry eyes. It is recommended that you not have laser eye surgery within 6 months before and after surgery.

If you have asthma and use antihistamines, they are known for causing dry eyes. If you are using steroid inhalers that should be okay. Some doctors may request that you not use the antihistamines for a few weeks before and after surgery.

If you are pregnant or expect to become pregnant within six months or are nursing you should not have laser eye surgery. The hormones the body produces while pregnant or lactating causes your refractive state to fluctuate, therefore the surgeon would not be able to get an accurate measurement for your correction. Secondly some of the drugs used after surgery may affect your baby.

It is very important to be totally upfront with your surgeon and disclose all medical history to prevent any further medical complications.

Lasik eye surgeons use an FDA approved laser for vision correction

Lasik eye surgery is a procedure that uses a laser to correct the vision of people who are nearsighted, farsighted or have astigmatism. With laser eye surgery a thin flap is made on the cornea using a laser. The surgeon then folds back the flap and removes some of the corneal tissue. When finished the surgeon puts the flap back in place.

People with nearsighted vision need a little different procedure. They need to have their cornea flattened because it is too high, and people who are farsighted need just the opposite - they need to have their cornea made higher or steepened. People who have astigmatism need to have their cornea corrected by smoothing out the irregularities.

If you are seriously considering lasik eye surgery you need to select a good lasik surgeon who can properly evaluate whether surgery is even for you. The surgeon will examine your eyes to determine their health and what level of vision correction you need. The surgeon will also talk to you about your health conditions that could possibly disqualify you for the surgery.

If the surgeon finds that you're not a good candidate for laser eye surgery there are other alternatives that he or she will make you aware of.

Lasik eye surgery excellent option for eye glass wearers

Lasik eye surgery is an excellent option to finally rid yourself of wearing glasses and/or contact lenses. This goes without saying but I will mention it anyway, lasik eye surgery should be performed by a board certified surgeon who uses FDA approved lasers.

Lasik eye surgery calls for a well experienced and competent eye surgeon. You want to find out as much information as you can on the doctor who will perform your surgery. You need to feel comfortable with your surgeon so make sure you ask any and all questions no matter how silly you think they are. A good surgeon will inform you of the pros and cons. Beware of any surgeon who tells you there aren't any risks. All surgery's have risks.

Once you locate a surgeon that you are happy with, he will have to perform an eye examination. During this examination he will take a look at the health of your eyes to determine exactly what type of surgery you should have.
